It's almost like those first world countries colonized them, extracted their resources with no compensation to the locals, violently suppressed uprisings and killed their leaders, and then used them as a dumping ground when colonialism stopped being viable.
Strange how East and South East Asian countries started doing so much better than African or Middle Eastern countries once colonialism ended. The Brits literally turned China into a people of drug addicts, and when their leadership tried to resist, they sent troops and violently subdued the Chinese insurrection so they could continue to sell their opium to them. By 1950, after Mao's Long March, China was in shambles, mass starvations were the norm. It was one of the very poorest countries on the whole planet, poorer than half of africa - and look where they're now.
There's also a glaring disparity between Somalia and its immediate geographic neighbors. Ethopia, Kenia and Tanzania have all made huge strides over the last 10-20 years and rank among the most improved African countries. Meanwhile, Somalia keeps being a desolate shithole. Maybe, just mayyyyybe, this disparity has more to do with Al-Shabaab islamists operating in Somalia today than with colonialism from 60 years ago.
