Well, it wasn't the US doing any dumping in Somalia. That was what I meant.

That's a pretty far fetched explanation of why piracy is a thing in Somalia. Piracy exists there because their economy is literally non existent and looting cargo ships is a pretty profitable venture. Somalia is located in the Gulf of Aden which is one of the most traveled through sea routes. Secondly, unlike other countries Somalia is in shambles so there's no enforcement structure to prevent or stop them. Like lol, they're raiding ships for personal gain and you're spinning this into them trying to prevent dumping?

Because no one can stop them, it's cheaper than proper disposal, and without an internationally "recognized" state, can't take anyone to court.

So.... what you're saying is.... we need an internationally recognized court to allow recovery of damages for this kind of thing.

Red herring. The US was never part of the discussion. Santara stated "civilized countries", not United States (or the UK, Spain, Italy, or others). It doesn't have to be US dumping for Somalia to rebel against the practice.

Now, were US ships hijacked as part of the campaign? Yes. Were there opportunists who co-opted the campaign for personal gain? Highly likely. But the dumping still happened.

Well, apparently it was the big four countries of Europe, that did the dumping. Somalia's govt. collapsed in 1991, and that's when the piracy started.
The Tsunami that brought the toxic substances up didn't happen till 2004.




I consider the US a civilized country, and we weren't dumping there. And the piracy started 13 years before the Tsunami.

Far fetched? The UN did a report on it in 2005. I know exactly where Somalia is in regard to highly traveled sea routes. This actually makes it easier for the dumpers, as they can load up on a ship already carrying other goods, and when they go through the Gulf of Aden, just push it overboard. And like Santara mentioned, without a globally-recognized state, what recourse did Somalia have, from a legal standpoint?
