Reality is that Russia has soaked up everything thrown at them and they still hold a huge chunk of Ukraine. This is no embarrassment for Russia, it's an embarrassment for NATO / EU if you ask me.

The amount of new territory they currently hold is smaller than the amount of territory they were forced to abandon since the start of this war. Militarily, Ukraine has met maybe 80% of its objectives in this war so far, Russia has accomplished maybe 20% of what they intended to do.

Pretty much the only thing standing between Russia and total failure right now is the vague hope that Ukraine and its allies won't be able to find an answer to the destruction of Ukraine's civilian infrastructure and that this will force them to their knees eventually.

I don't know if that's true. If Ukraine really does assault Crimea, I imagine there's a really good chance tactical nukes are used.

Fair enough, but still, that would be a huge escalation which would carry equally huge risks for Russia.

Also, I'm not sure if the same logic holds for Donetsk and Luhansk. These places don't have as high a share of ethnic Russians as Crimea and aren't nearly as historically charged. If Ukraine made advances into Donetsk/Luhansk territory that Russia has been holding since 2014, would that really be sufficient for nuclear escalation?

I was thinking that maybe it's possible to stop the russians using nuclear plant as a shield for their shelling weapons: anti-personal weapons destroying human body but not infrastructures:
So maybe some kinds of clusters ammunitions and/or thermobaric bombing. With small drones. Not an expert but maybe it's possible that way.

Using a thermobaric bomb in a nuclear facility which already has all sorts of cracks and structural weaknesses due to months of shelling would be extremely reckless.

Telling Russian men to quit smoking is a straight way to a repeat of 1917.
