This is all highly speculative though, both the peace talks which both sides were alledgedly ready for in early summer before Johnson's visit and the reasoning behind Russia's annexation of the southern oblasts.

Also note that in the early summer, it still looked as if Ukraine would barely be able to hold on, military-wise. Negotiating a peace deal at that point in time made a lot more sense for them than it did just 2 months later, after Western himars artillery had arrived and decimated Russian supply lines behind the front. Over the summer, the tides of the war shifted significantly in Ukraine's favor and it seems perfectly plausible to me that this is the main reason why they took on a more bellicose stance, basically going "we will reconquer as much of our country as we can before starting peace talks".

These rumors about Ukraine which was willing to settle for peace with Russia before its Western overlords (in the form of Johnson) intervened and egged them on to continue fighting... to me, that seems like one more piece of the Russian propaganda narrative that "Ukraine is (ab)used as a pawn by the selfish West and acts against its self-interest by not giving in to Russia".

Or it could of been a simple pledge that hey if you keep fighting we'll supply you with tens of billions in weapons, training and keep pumping your country with billions. That assurance alone could be enough for politicians and decision makers in Ukraine to say okay war keeps going. I mean it's not like their sons are doing the fighting.

Ukraine right now is a huge black box of funding. I can guarantee there are a lot of millionaires being minted as a result of this war. Both in the west and in Ukraine. Eastern Europe has been corrupt for a very long time. There is zero chance that all of the money flowing there right now is going towards intended uses.
