A counterattack in Winter could arguably be worse. Logistics are even more complicated in Winter. Thats mainly why I expect a Spring offensive.
Also, it gives time for Russia to bring in "better trained" troops. Currently they are basically plugging gaps with raw conscripts.
Might not even happen at all, however it is what I am hearing and reading about. Putin is already balls deep in this calamity. What's to stop him rolling the dice again next year in attempt to force Zelensky's hand in negotiations.
I would add that the Spring conditions were not the overriding factor in why Russians special operation was an unmitigated disaster.
