Political adviser Mykhailo Podolyak accused Russia of mining everything from apartments to sewers and planning to shell Kherson from the other side of the River Dnipro.

Horrible.

What did you expect, that they'd say come on in and let NATO surround us, take Crimea too and Georgia and Kazakhstan while you're at it?

Kherson will be basically no mans land. Pointless to take it by Ukraine considering they will probably be exposed from cross-river fire. Even if they do take it, crossing the river is going to be near impossibel with Russia preparing for as long as they did. Would be foolish and wasteful to throw troops at it atm.

Don't have a crystal ball at this point. Ukraine could also simply focus on other fronts and later finish the job from another side.

As I understand it Kherson is the gateway to Crimea so this is it.

Not really, you can't sustain an offensive across dniper from either side (at kherson). The river is hundreds of meters in width, you could try to ferry troops but that would get smashed.

You can, but the price paid in blood may be high, also don't underestimate motivation, plain stupidity and winter factors.

Why are people so shocked that Russia doesn't want its troops hanging out on the west side of the Dnipro?

It leaves them backed up against the river and at the mercy of elevated artillery to the west. If they cross, they can build defensive positions and blast anything crossing, and also don't have to worry about supplying troops via targettable bridges or ferries.

Is there any strategic reason why this is being viewed as some sort of defeat? Even if they back out of Kherson, what do they actually lose? According to what they said about Kherson it's a risk to stay there because the Kakhovka dam could be attacked (apparently has been hit already) resulting in their forces being isolated from the rest of the military/supply lines.

Even if you can establish a bridgehead, keeping it supplied is extremely hard. (this is the main reason the Russians pulled out by the way). The main attack would have to come from zap.
