I dunno about the irony, I think the defining character of America (and Canada and Australia) has to be found in their initial genocides, and additionally to differing degrees in the history of slavery.
The foundation of American mythology is that they escaped from an imposing tyrant to establish a revolutionary, vibrant liberal democracy. What they actually did was rebel against the abolition of slavery passed by London, and went to war to keep their human tools. It was a counter-revolution in that sense. A lot of Americans (not on PARDfront, perhaps) look at the ACW with a bit of chagrin about the cause of the Confederacy, but haven't come around to understanding it's really more of a second substantiation of the America's initial rebellion against abolition.
Where in the fuck do you come up with this cockamamie bullshit?
1775, the colonials rebelled, and support for the rebellion was strongest in the northern colonies, where slavery was far less prevalent.
1833, Britain ends slavery.
