still, it's not exclusively incompetence and a general disregard for the life of the common soldier that contributed to the high losses of the soviet army. they faced the majority of the reich's elite and veteran troops, and later on particularly fierce resistance out of fear of (retaliatory) cruelties.
Those orders to ban retreat cut both ways, to be fair, though with the Germans, it didn't become a serious strategic problem until Stalingrad.
