https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2022/10/11/as-europe-falls-into-recession-russia-climbs-out

I'm torn between "Everything The Economist says is bad analysis" and "When The Economist is saying positive things about the enemy, it's bad for the West."

Meanwhile in Europe: https://www.shine.cn/news/world/2210121403/

Economy Minister of France gripes about all the decisions that his country and other European leaders made, but tries to deflect culpability onto the Americans. Anyone but them must be responsible for Europes descent into capital flight and deindustrialization:

And in Ex-euro Britain, here's a good thread on the gilts meltdown in the UK and it's risk of spread to the EU both through contagion and systemic rationales: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1580285433573150720.html

The economist is a snapshot of whats happening around the world. if you hold their opinions at arms length, knowing its a western publication, I would say its a good publication, as state media typically does not provide such comprehensive content. For a long time I was subscribed to that and the International Herald-Tribune.

were almost at 1500 pages of "who's fault it is"
i'd rather see politicians discussing how to bring both countries to the table, instead of discussing how to prolong and escalate a bad situation.

Ukraine has written it into its laws that they will not negotiate a peace deal with Russia.
The only country that can broker a peace is the US (noting it is the US that is basically funding Ukraine).
The US has told countries not to talk / negotiate with Russia.
Anyone in the west, politician or otherwise, that suggests peace, is basically ostracized.

Basically Ukraine and the US are winning, and therefore the idea is they believe that they dont need to negotiate with Russia. Therefore while I also would like to see politicians discussing how to bring both countries to the table this is simply not going to happen until things escalate much further. Russian will not be able to win through conventional means. Yes, they are playing russian roulette with the world. who will blink first.

russia has no right to demand, with the threat of war no less, that it's neighbors don't get to join NATO.

So you're saying that US had no right to demand removal of USSR nukes from Cuba, right?

yes, and ? when things escalate your better off leaving a door open to talk, not closing it. if you have a disagreement with someone you can just shut them out no problem, but russia is a big country and there are serious ramifications if you shut russia out, or invade it. I acknowledge that there was a chance at peace early on (and as i understand it the US and the UK told Ukraine not to accept the settlement being presented to them by Russia) but that there will be no peace talks until the position has changed to the extent that the US is prepared to sit down and talk. probably 12-18 months away at earliest.

to be quite frank, it is normal in times of war not to negotiate but for there to be winners and losers, and the losers just have to accept it. the problem here is that the parties fighting are the US and Russia.
