Russian military history is 500 years of just throwing peasants at it's neighbors, then they had 2 bright spots where they were considered genius because idiots invaded them in winter. Whether Ukraine falls to Russia or not the price that idiot is going to pay may cost him his office, if he's lucky.
How on earth was WW2 a bright spot for Russia? They got caught with their pants down, almost lost, only hung on because of winter, turned the tides of the war mostly because their opponent had bitten off more than he could chew and was unable to sustain supply lines. Then, when they went on offense, they recklessly sacrificed millions of additional soldiers in their quest to conquer Germany before the Americans, and failed at this objective too.
Something like half the death toll suffered by the Red Army during WW2 was due to the incompetence or carelessness of their commanders, rather than the war itself. Demographically speaking, Russia/the Soviet Union never truly recovered from the death toll of WW2 - they have always struggled with being a dangerously underpopulated country, and the death toll from WW2 made the difference between their population ending up at 140m or ending up at 240m or so. (Losses during a time of still high fertility rates of course compound over the subsequent decades!)
