Russian military history is 500 years of just throwing peasants at it's neighbors, then they had 2 bright spots where they were considered genius because idiots invaded them in winter. Whether Ukraine falls to Russia or not the price that idiot is going to pay may cost him his office, if he's lucky.

US estimates for military casualties as of 9th March:

Russia 3000 - 6000 dead
Ukraine 2000 - 4000 dead

No info on wounded numbers but this is usually around 3 times the number of dead

For 2 weeks of fighting these are WW2 level casualties

its just sad really. when you give poorly trained (or nontrained) civilians arms and expect them to combat against a formidable enemy. This period is going to haunt Ukraine for generations :(

It's not sad..

It's how a country should defend against an invasion.
Russia has 200 000 soldiers and Ukraine can mass 9 000 000 to 12 000 000 soilders.
Russia can never win on the ground.

It's quite normal in countrys whit general conscription like my country.
We train peapole in thier 18-20's in armed combat.
then you are placed in war duty for 10-20 years.

That way if a invasion force comes you can mass 30% of the population in the military to defend.

i would tend to agree with those figures even though i cant fact check them from different sources. and yes re: wounded. more doom and gloom to follow.

The casualties are going to be enormous. you say 9m-12m soldiers, but their army is only around 100K. the rest are all poorly trained. we can agree to disagree on whether that is sad or not. if Russia cant win on the ground they will just win with air or w/e bombardment. I dont see Putin changing his mind, to my mind he thinks his entire legacy is at stake here and sees it as victory or nothing.

I agree that war is sad.

But when a civilian take up arms he/she is'nt a civilian any more.

How on earth was WW2 a bright spot for Russia? They got caught with their pants down, almost lost, only hung on because of winter, turned the tides of the war mostly because their opponent had bitten off more than he could chew and was unable to sustain supply lines. Then, when they went on offense, they recklessly sacrificed millions of additional soldiers in their quest to conquer Germany before the Americans, and failed at this objective too.

Something like half the death toll suffered by the Red Army during WW2 was due to the incompetence or carelessness of their commanders, rather than the war itself. Demographically speaking, Russia/the Soviet Union never truly recovered from the death toll of WW2 - they have always struggled with being a dangerously underpopulated country, and the death toll from WW2 made the difference between their population ending up at 140m or ending up at 240m or so. (Losses during a time of still high fertility rates of course compound over the subsequent decades!)

the reality of Russia in WW2 is one of harrowing tragedy, all they got was East Germany and some concessions that slightly helped bolster the soviet effort for another 40 or so years.

that doesnt change the fact that people say OFTEN in pard that the soviets won WW2, not the US/UK. the reality of them sending 1 soldier with a gun and 1 with bullets and feeding men into a meat grinder has been washed away by propaganda built on the soviets liberating concentration camps and Hitler foolishly invading in winter.
