All the world, throughout history, was driven by self-interest. Maybe barring some religious conflicts with dubious motives, but otherwise western self-destruction is what's unique, not western self-interest. There's plenty of precedent for warmongering countries to raid their neighbors for their own benefit, for securing their borders, for preempting rival military buildup, for plunder and women and riches. How much precedent is there for interventionalism that aggravates conflicts and causes more death and destruction in the name of some vaguely defined, self-defeating moral ideal? 'We must bomb them to save them' is a unique contemporary phenomenon.
My understanding is that American governments, either Right or Left (barring Donald Trump and Pre-Kennedy) see intervention as being done in their self-interest, just as not intervening currently (and by intervening i mean with troops/militarily) is seen as in their self interest. i.e. they do not want to go to war with Ukraine on this issue. I dont disagree with you that American foreign policy creates long term chaos in many places they went to.
