after the original approach of "welding doors shut so residents couldn't escape", China has literally unrolled its new method of sealing residents in Shanghai inside their building with metal fencing that's being erected in front of doorways throughout the city overnight.
Now even if the residents starve to death or die of medical emergencies that go untreated, their property will be preserved and intact. Except in case of fires, but in that case the property was lost anyway so the chinese lives lost are irrelevant. No need for the authorities to damage their buildings to seal people inside anymore, when they can use temporary removeable fencing. Put up the fences, take them down later, count the dead, collect whatever is left behind.
