Obama softening up donors in case Warren gets the nomination is a smart move. Plus his detachment from the primary helps avoid the "establishment rigged the process" arguments from 2016.

Imho, the donor class will sit this election out, as they promised, if Warren wins the nomination. They'll let her run dry on money and watch her get crushed. They clearly dont like Trump's anti-immigration agenda and his trade wars, but will those things cost them more than 2-5% of their net worth per year? Doubtful. And such a wealth tax might become politically entrenched and very difficult to rescind once it gets passed by Congress. Ending trade wars or re-upping the yearly migration levels once Trump is gone will be comparatively easier.
