Right now the toughest and harshest response will be publicly portrayed with the hopes of dissuading them from dropping nukes but tbh I don't think we would nuke them if they did. The problem with nuking them is probability of actually hitting all of their nuke silos and disabling them before they get theirs off is very low. You then have nuclear armed Russian subs, modern ones, that are lurking not far from striking distance, each one with capability to carry several nuclear armed rockets. Those are hard to detect/keep track of and in an event of Russia getting nuked i'm sure they would respond.

Because Russia would just allow the US/NATO to hammer them with conventional weaponry without responding with nukes. Lmfao. Merely launching missiles at the Russian mainland is extremely dangerous because Russia would not know if they were nuclear or conventional and could very well respond with an automated nuclear launch thinking it was an all out nuclear attack, especially given that US doctrine calls for a nuclear first strike.

And no, China is definitely not sanctioning Russia under any circumstance. They have an alliance and China hates the US just as much as Russia. That won't change regardless of what happens in Ukraine. As for India, they are going to do what's best for themselves and don't give a fuck about the US

Or the off ramp could be they keep the annexed territories, no nukes no more deaths, etc. Ukraine starts to rebuild and gets tons of investment from Europe and flourishes. But this option would mean we don’t materially degrade Russia so we’d rather push the world on the brink of a nuclear war because that’s more important than giving them any optical win and threaten the world order.
