Russia has been trying to cleanly annect a huge country like Ukraine with 150k vs. 600k. Ukrainian soldiers are getting more training, supplies and weapons during the "stalemate". Last month, Ukraine retook territories occupied by Russia. Putin and his cleptocracy noticed they can't win anymore. As an act of desperation, Russia called for partial mobilization which would be around 300k peeps so you'd have 600k fully backed by Nato vs 450k ruskies. Also, Russia tries to legally annex Luhansk and Donezk in order to have a free hand to retailate the way they like against "aggressor", meaning carpet bombing, chemical weapons and even tactical nukes.
From our neutral view, next escalation level was achieved. Big losers as always are going to be innocent civilians, in this case people in western parts of Ukraine.
