Ahead of Friday’s emergency summit, the business leaders of Europe’s non-ferrous metals industry are writing together
to raise the alarm about Europe’s worsening energy crisis and its existential threat to our future. Our sector has already
been forced to make unprecedented curtailments in the last 12 months. We are deeply concerned that the winter ahead
could deliver a decisive blow to many of our operations,
and we call on EU and Member State leaders to take emergency
action to preserve their strategic electricity-intensive industries and prevent permanent job losses.

50% of the EU’s aluminium and zinc capacity has already been forced offline due to the power crisis, as well as
significant curtailments in silicon and ferroalloys production and further impacts felt across copper and nickel sectors.
In
the last month, several companies have had to announce indefinite closures and many more are on the brink ahead of
a life-or-death winter for many operations. Producers face electricity and gas costs over ten times higher than last year,
far exceeding the sales price for their products. We know from experience that once a plant is closed it very often
becomes a permanent situation, as re-opening implies significant uncertainty and cost.

These sort of boring fundamentals get lost when covering whatever new offensive or atrocity or whatever of this war. Europe is in serious trouble.

Definitely you.

The vast majority needs pipeline infrastructure to export, and those don't get built overnight. It would take years to establish the pipeline infrastructure to sell the same volume to China as they sell to Europe today. What China resells amounts to a hill of beans.

Only sad because Russia didn't have to invade anyone.

Like the West doesn't need to invade anyone? Pot is telling the kettle it's black huh. Imagine the world dogpiling on us with full blown sanctions after one of our latest invasions, lol.

And stopping Russian exports squeezes EU and other parts of the world out of energy, so much win here (slow clap)

It's most def you. Just like the dumbasses that thought Vietnam war was a good idea or staying in Afghanistan for 2 decades and supplying the Taliban with materials to supply a brand new army, can't make that shit up.

Ukraine war is going to be a similar disaster there's no way it's going to be any different. What a waste.

Holy shit, I wouldn't have thought you could put more dumb on display. You uncritically compared US misadventures in Vietnam and Afghanistan with US involvement in Ukraine, as opposed to Russian involvement in Ukraine. Russia is the one waging their newest Vietnam story, with the US reprising China's and Russia's role in Vietnam. Then you went and acted like I condone the US warmongering. Sorry lil fella, Russia is the warmonger here.

^^ big difference between orchestrating a coup and supporting your allies

US supporting Ukraine is so wildly different to US' destruction of the Middle East, South America, and Mexico

Ukraine went 50km deep into previously Russian occupied territory. Is the "special operation" going accordingnto plan?

If the Russians retake that area while inflicting more casualties than they take, then yes. If the Ukrainians hold onto it and even take more ground, then no.

Seems difficult to find reliable information and it's possible that we don't know for the next week or so. They say the Ukrainians took Izyum which is pretty remarkable. What are you folks hearing?

Surprised no one's posting about this Kharkov counteroffensive. Seems like Ukraine is making much bigger gains than most people not devoted to either side imagined, though it's hard to get a completely clear picture since Russian commentators and aggregators are variously pretty quiet, posting reasonable cope and in a lot of cases having meltdowns. Their Ukrainian counterparts are as unreliable as ever, though it's highly disturbing to see so many of them openly salivating about carrying out reprisals against the civilian population. While that makes the Ukrainians look bad, it also makes the Russians look bad for not doing more to defend them.

Russian forces seem to be doing orderly retreats until reinforcements arrive and they can defend with minimal losses. Ukraine is surging forward without having to do much direct fighting along most of the front.

Will be interesting to see how things develop in the coming month. I imagine there may be a shakeup in strategy - Russia's lack of full commitment to this fight in light of this successful (so far) push ought to get them considering a higher rate of mobilization.

Seems Russian forces are retreating from Izyum, but the more reasonable channels also saying Ukraine hasn't entered yet. Does seem it's going to fall, though. Civilians are also flowing out of their to the West.
