The FBI for its part spent the better part of Trump's term lying to courts and Congress in an effort to continue a baseless investigation. I'm not going to touch on "back channel.... selling national security secrets" because that sounds ridiculous. It would be incredibly serious if that were true, and we need serious evidence to back up serious allegations. In my opinion, the death penalty is appropriate for that sort of betrayal.

January 6th was a riot by outraged Trump supporters. The violence was deplorable, and their emotional state was clearly impacted by Trump's repeated claims of electoral fraud. That's disgraceful, and Trump suffered immensely in the court of public opinion. That's the appropriate venue for that struggle to play out. What we should avoid doing is constructing elaborate myths that are actively contradicted by the available facts. It was not an attempted overthrow of the US government, which we know because no charges to that effect have been filed, and no conspiracy uncovered. Police officers were not murdered by violent protesters. There was no known plot by armed men with zip ties to abduct lawmakers. The White House, for its part, clearly did not anticipate the riot, with Trump himself surprised at one point at the violence as it unfolded.

It makes sense for them to maintain that relationship. That's the obvious answer, and is the sort of soft corruption that we see throughout the entire lobbying industry. Trump was very vocal about the fact that he wanted Pence to initiate a (doomed) legal challenge to the electoral count. That challenge would have been reviewed by a court and rejected. Trump is not being charged with a crime because there is no crime with which to prosecute him.

Democrats calculated that establishing a quasi-judicial court in the legislative was a popular thing to do. It looks like they miscalculated, more Americans agree with me, Biden is the least popular president in history, and the Democratic party is losing the generic congressional ballot to Republicans to an extent not seen in decades. If I were them, I'd change course.
