Ukraine could be 100% ethnic russian and if they tried to join nato, eu etc, russia would've still invaded.

Russia invaded because it wants a vassal state maybe even complete reintegration of Ukraine and Belarus into a USSR 2.0, if that happens more wars/new cold war will follow. Putins vertical kleptocracy cannot bring prosperity to 97% of Russia through economical means first due to rampant corruption and thefts his entire system is based on, to keep power he needs wars and "outside enemies" to create patriotic ephoria waves and to deviate attention from poverty and degradation of life in Russia.
