Nepotism is a strong influence in everything unfortunately but generally some level of competence was required to make appointments to various positions digestible even if those selected weren't necessarily the best choices.

I don't believe this. At all. Pete Buttigieg as the dude in charge of transportation? His town only need a fleet of like 3 busses and 5 taxis. The Nepotism I can agree with you on. But the competence...way nay. Hanlon's razor has slashed it's way into those positions. Zero competence. The people are just distracted and don't care anymore. If you think slapping anyone who's the same side as you into a position and people just being happy their side has more spots is digestible then...sure.
