The death penalty is usually meant to be a painless, quick death. Experimentation could be much worse than that.

I suppose that is more incentive not to rape or murder but it gets into some sketchy ethical territory pretty quickly

I think that it should be something that can easily be done. We just need the political will (and the stomach) for it.

I feel like the justice system can already abuse the punishments it currently doles out, which are already nasty enough with solitary confinement, forced labour, etc.

As long as a punishment is not cruel or unusual by common law, of which legitimate scientific experimentation is neither cruel nor unusual as it is directly purpose driven, it should be fair game

You know those experiments are painful, yet you have no problem using innocent animals for it. You are no better.

This paper also highlights the use of anesthesia. As long as anesthesia is issued during a particularly painful experiment, there is no cruelty.

Every single person of course does it, either consciously or subconsciously.
