The lady apologized fortunately. I think she just made a dumb decision as opposed to malice.

Meh, here. It's a perspective from a lawyer. Not a US lawyer though. But the guy seems pretty level. At any rate, hope you enjoy:

Quick note: Am I the only person that still does the shift+enter for all ubb posts because the early versions didn't do an actual line break without it? God I feel fucking old.

Separate, but similar case: Basically, two young black entrepreneurs that have office space in a building in uptown Minneapolis get profiled at the building's private gym (access to which is keycard-controlled) by a white man thinking they don't belong there.

This is the same man who thought black folks surely are up to no good in a gym.

Ending a years-long debate over honoring a defender of slavery, Minnesota’s Supreme Court ruled 5-2 Wednesday that the commissioner of the state’s Department of Natural Resources had authority to restore the name of Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska, as the Dakota people call it.

Quote
The name’s baggage left a bad taste in the mouths of many Minneapolis residents, though, and in 2017 the Minneapolis Park Board began working to restore the name given to it by the region’s native Dakota people, Bde Maka Ska (buh DAY muh KAHS ka), or White Earth Lake.

The parks board and Hennepin County Board found that they did not have the authority to change the name themselves, and sent the issue to the Department of Natural Resources, which took public comment on the issue and decided to restore the name of the lake in January 2018.

Quote
Enter an organization known as Save Lake Calhoun, led by local venture capitalist Tom Austin, who lives near the lake. Austin gathered signatures for a petition opposing the name change, and petitioned the Minnesota Court of Appeals for a writ of certiorari. That petition was dismissed, but an appeal of a different case — a petition for a writ of quo warranto in Ramsey County, based in the state capital of St. Paul — was taken up by the Minnesota Court of Appeals after being denied in district court.
Austin did not reply to a request for comment Wednesday evening, but the Minneapolis Star Tribune published his opinion piece after the Court of Appeals decision, saying that while he had no love for Calhoun the man, he had challenged the decision because “in the end, I was disgusted by how everyday Minnesotans had been steamrollered by politicians, the media and activists and forced to adopt a name (Bde Maka Ska) that we didn’t support.”

So, I've given both the park Karen and the Apartment Karen some thought, and here's my analysis:

First some basic principles:
1. In general, leave other people alone. If what they're doing is not directly effecting you or someone you know, and it's not obviously harming anyone else, do not interfere.
2. In general, if it's not your job to enforce rules, laws, or policies, do not attempt to directly enforce rules, laws, or policies unless you yourself or someone you know are being DIRECTLY harmed.
3. In general, if the scenario is not an emergency, either call the related authorities or police if you see something taking place that should not be, that doesn't directly involve you or someone you know, and does not directly cause you harm.

Taking these things into account:

1. The park Karen shouldn't have been walking her dog in that portion of the park. She shouldn't have tried to choke out her dog to control it (the leash exists for a reason). She shouldn't have tendered a false and racist police report. Basically, she acted like a complete cunt and an absolute racist. So, she has lost her dog, lost her job, apologized for being a cunt, and is now going to have to suffer for her stupidity for years. Justice (and Karma) served. On the flipside, the person recording her had no business interfering with her, no business offering her dog food that might well have been poisoned for all she knew, was neither a park ranger or a cop, and should quite frankly have shut the fuck up an minded his own business. He had no right whatsoever to interfere with her, and even less than zero attempting to coerce her animal into coming to him. The entire incident would never have happened in the first place if he'd left her alone, and simply called the proper authorities to handle the issue in a legally appropriate fashion. So while the Karen in this case is a cunt, the guy was clearly looking (and prepared) for drama. He WANTED to create a scene, and he succeeded. He's an asshole, and should neither be praised nor defended for his actions. He was in the wrong as well.

2. The apartment Karen is just a cunt. No two ways about it. She attempted to block the man's access to his own home, ask questions that she had no right to ask, followed him to his door, and outright harassed him. In literally every respect, she was in the wrong. Had she had concerns, she could have called the police. But quite frankly, if there are 4+ floors to this building, then she simply has no way of knowing who lives there, who's supposed to be there or not. Even calling the apartment manager is beyond her rights, because the apartment manager should NOT be giving out information about tenants to other tenants. There's really no other way to look at it but that this particular Karen believes herself to be in a position of authority that she's not, and believes it's her job to interfere with other people's lives based on this assumed authority. I think the man was overly patient with her, and far more forgiving than I would have been. I'd have filed a complaint with the apartment manager, and filed both a harassment report and restraining order with the police. Anyone who wants to attempt to bar me from access to my home for no reason whatsoever deserves every bit of legal trouble I can douse them in. All that being said, nothing in that video indicated any racial motivation. The assumption that she reacted as she did because the man was black is simply an assumption.

so a guy should call cops to a many acre park to enforce a leash ordinance. sure, i bet they'd have jumped right on that. the guy also stated she's a repeat offender, among many repeat offenders he deals with regularly. this is the first time he turned on a camera, and it was after she reacted defensively and pulled out HER phone. he prob would have hit the delete button if she didnt go racist.

he was in the wrong, lol. wtf man.

If she's a repeat offender, why didn't he call the parks and recreation number to get a ranger out? Enforcement of park guidelines is LITERALLY their job. Not his job. If they didn't have any available, then yes, law enforcement could also deal with the issue.

Once again, he was interfering where he had no right or authority. Had he left her alone, it would never have happened. I didn't for one moment attempt to excuse her abhorrent actions, why are you so quick to excuse his? He had no authority in the matter. He was imposing himself on someone else in a way he had no right to do.
