Which is exactly why I think that the next Diablo release will be a subscription based MMO/RPG hybrid. They'd have another WoW level subscription based game on their hands.

Not sure if it would Cannibalize their current WoW base, but it would definitely attract some Diablo fans that don't play wow.

that's for sure one way i can see them going.

BUT they did have some serious success on D3 release. if they can make D4 a well scaled dungeon crawler with a good act based story like D2 was, and D3 was supposed to be, they might have a chance. Real money AH was awesome, and was a micro transactional model for profits. the game fell apart for a simple reason, they killed RMAH and made it so you hit max level with ease but found it REALLY hard to get any upgrades.

get a game where every level beyond 30 is hard for solo play, and every level from 30-80 is still slow in group play. make it all about boss killing and running hotspots in online multiplayer. make upgrades hard but not too hard to find. variable roll unique are still ok. ZERO bind to account items, ZERO bind to char items. and a workable PVP system. character customization scaled back from D3 levels, not quite to D2 levels.

done. big money game with massive pre-orders. do a beta and play station at Blizzcon and it sells itself. people really do want an old school dungeon crawler with pvp. more people would play d2 if it wasnt such shit graphics.

Sounds a lot like what I'd like for the next Diablo title to be.

Let's hope they come to their senses.

That's a very odd way of looking at it lol. The AH was terrible because everyone got their gear from there as opposed to in-game. The loot system was fundamentally broken and that was addressed in Loot 2.0. The D3 launch was also fucking horrible. Sure, they made A LOT of cash, but the experience was just awful. I think most Blizz employees saw D3 as a massive failure in game design.

Everything seemed to downward trend after the Activision-Blizzard merger, same goes with Activision-Bungie IMO. At least Bungie had the sense to buy out. Dave B had a good posting on the 'mass exodus'.

i guess it's a bit hard to pick apart because everything that i say "worked" had it's issues.

in the start of the game they had a stable currency, gold. it wasn't easy to get, it was how all items on the RMAH were priced, etc. everyone needed it.

yes people did instantly gear up chars sometimes, but who had the gold to truly gear out a decent char? you bought a shitty echoing fury, a random unique for every slot, then went back to playing the game and farming. you got just good enough gear to farm. that's fundamentally what D2 is. people log on 12 hours after ladder reset, buy a spirit, rhyme, stealth, and start farming.

the real problem here was the ease to hit high/max level. people bought too much gear because leveling was easy, make leveling harder and you'll stagnate the buyouts.

the other problem we're not really touching on here is the lack of coherent game. it became mini games, rifts, events, etc. obviously that's kind of what D2 is. cows, baals, diablo, etc. BUT if you want to play the game you can, it's coherant act to act, difficulty to difficulty. chop that out and you lose a part of the population. for every baal game there's a game of kids still questing the game, even in 2019. its nuts.

they have a successful model. take the number of "ok", "good", "really good", "godly", and "super godly" items a player can find in a 100 hour window of farming diablo 2. build your loot table around that ratio. it's worked for decades in keeping players engaged. then add a GOLD auction house with no ability to buy gold for $$. basically a D2 economy, with out the d2jsp middle man. in 2019 d2 and d2jsp are synonymous. perhaps 1/100 players dont use jsp. then work in pvp in a world setting, not some private dueling room.

all anyone wants is an updated D2. adding in AH is optional, as we can just use jsp if they don't.

but overall i REALLY liked the first 3-4 months of D3. like a lot. then it was just shit.

Buy from blizzard and you are supporting Communist China. Tencent is a fucking cancer to gaming.

D3 was shitty from the get go and I’m responding to shame you for liking it.

D2 was amazing for many different reasons. For me the pvp scene was what kept me around as I became an expert. The fact that you could get previous patch items was also massive for my drive to always get better. I only dueled at the end before getting hacked. I ran duelers with things like pcomb 45 lifers, 08 godlies like soul spurs , 08valk, etc.

I think it would be a great idea to work in scarcity in patch mechanics. Having some items with specific attributes only spawn before patch 1 of d4 and never again be farmed would be great. Have runewords again and don’t overwhelm players with like 27 lines of attributes for items.

Just my two cents.

Even if it was amazing I probably would never play it at this point though. So many more important things that take precedence. Being an adult kind of sucks.
