In importance I'd rank them

1. Initial Capital
2. Hard Work
3. Education
4. Spirit? (assuming this means perseverence and passion)
5. Abilities
6. Connections
7. Cheating
8. Luck (not sure what this means)

An example of "luck" would be my application not getting put on a first-timer's desk to medical school, but instead getting on the desk of a reviewer with a boner for the underprivileged.

Lots of poor people that win the lottery just end up poor again
Hard to put initial capital at #1 when someone can't make anything of themselves after getting millions of dollars handed to them

I don't see how the lottery is relevant, since the number of people who've won the jackpot (or even just 1 million) are such a small demographic. I also don't know if winning the lottery qualifies as "initial capital" because it wasn't present early on/throughout their life.

None of the factors are sufficient on their own. But one has to be first.

Initial capital makes the biggest relative difference.

Doesn't really matter when it happened
"Initial" can be any point before you start striving for success

Would disagree that it doesn't matter. Levels of wealth have tangible effects on development, thought, experiences and much more. Someone growing up in poverty is going to have a much different experience than someone who comes from a wealthy family and grew up wealthy, and this includes even if/when the person in poverty wins the lottery.

Instant wealth/capital is very different than initial capital, at least in terms of how I interpret Voyaging's original post from this chain.

This seems more like a realistic analysis of what barriers each respective socioeconomic class has to overcome to advance or remain competitive.

The poor people lack start up cash and connections, and if you don't know anybody or have any cash to do anything with, the ceiling is probably pretty low..... If you're born with that stuff, such as a good extended family and growing up on a house, you are just education and some luck away from achieving that next level. The biggest currency with the super successful are ideas and praxis, or how ideas are actualized, and also a noble spirit, as in somebody who creates and lives out his or her own values.

I think this data says a lot.

Of course it matters when it happens, that's just as important as the amount.

We don't live forever and ROI requires time.
