I don't agree with this, smells more like Bill DeBlasio trying to pander to everyone under the sun again. "Hey everybody, look how tolerant and and progressive I am! Vote for me!" As someone already mentioned, I have no problem with winter and spring break, mainly because, although having mostly religious roots, I view them more as logical breaks from a calender point-of-view. Start the falll semester, study hard, work hard, then take a break with the family; then resume with more studying and work so you can take another break to enjoy the thawing weather.
Anyway, the primary reason I oppose adding yet more religious holidays is that work productivity can potentially decrease as you risk having even more people demand their own religious holidays. Hey, if Christians and Muslims can have their slice of pie, why can't we, so sayeth the Voodoos, Hindus, and Moon worshippers.
Personally, keep religious holidays as excused and voluntary holidays for individuals, but don't make them universal government holidays. Even though it's against my better judgment, at least that way you won't end up with a million Kim Davises and Widowmakers screeching about their religious way of life being waged war upon.
