You can confess mortal sins and have them forgiven(by the priest).

I thought mortal sins cannot be forgiven? (Deemed eternal damnation?)

(Not entirely sure on this matter, why I'm curious)

Not according to catholic doctrine.

What you're talking about is 'eternal sins'.

But I don't think catholicism accepts eternal sin.

Catholics believe that there is venial and mortal sin. Venial sin is every day sin, and mortal sin are supposed to be serious offenses against God. Both can be forgiven by confession to a priest. If you die with mortal sin, Catholics say you are judged harshly.

It should be noted that the only sins which cannot be forgiven according to catholic doctrine are suicide and not asking a male priest for god's forgiveness.

I'm curious as to how those who have been excommunicated can acquire grace/salvation/whatever.

My understanding of the Pope's goal is to create a culture not blind to the sin of homosexuality, but accepting of homosexuals as sinners in our midst.

Related to the nice conversation we've got going on sin:

Quote (Matthew 21:31)
And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

What is his gay policy? It's not like the Catholic church lynches gays or anything....

This concept of "greater openness" is very ambiguous.

It seems like a Glasnost for the church. I'm sure that plenty of the priests who voted against this are closeted homosexuals.

And they should remain in the closet since homosexuality is a sin.

Closet or not, they are gay.

They need to forgive themselves for it.

Being gay isn't a sin and it's the way God created you.

Acting on the urges is what makes it sinful.
