this.

Saving for retirement is all well and good and probably a wise choice... but I wouldn't sacrifice my life now for a possible financially comfortable retirement. I feel I would regret not doing all the things I wanted to while I was young.

What do you mean by "how money is viewed today"? I'm pretty sure there has always been people that weren't too concerned with money.

I was at Chipotle today and a kid, maybe 10 years old, sees a Lotus drive up, looks at his mom and says "wow mom I want one of those when I turn 16!" his mom replies "you really want to be a person who only cares about money and nice cars?" I wondered why the mom didn't reply "work hard and you can earn that if you want it!"

I just turned 25 and have a nice house in a nice area, a new car and I do alright for myself, nothing super fancy, but i'll pretty easily retire around 40-45 years old. I hope my kids grow up wanting to reach for the stars. I just far too often see my colleagues sitting idle with their college degrees making $30k-40k a year that will probably never make more than $45k a year for 10 years because they don't have the drive to go the extra mile and earn a raise/promotion. Then I see those who do pretty well for themselves and they spend it on a stupid amount of rent and going to bars every night so much that when I ask if they want to go out to lunch they literally can't until they get their next paycheck.

I know I'm a bit old school, but am I the only person who has the goal of frugality and being able to live a bit simpler now so that I can have a wealthy retirement and so my kids can go to college and be more successful than I even hope to be?

damn, i wish i could do just '' alright '' for myself lol

I live in LA and the things that people spend a lot on are rent and cars. I see people who make 45K driving BMWs and spending 2 grand per month on rent alone. They don't even put money into their retirement even though their employers WILL MATCH CONTRIBUTIONS. That's the American way though. We're not savers.

My way of life: put 10% of your GROSS salary into a Roth 401k. Get a whole life insurance policy. Your retirement will be taken care of if you do that starting from a young age. Don't use debt unless it's for property, a business, or a car (and don't spend more than 35K on a car). Put 10% of NET salary into a savings account.

I work in something that I am passionate about.
I will work hard for my money, but ultimately it does not matter.
I don't work hard to earn some possessions. I work hard because I truly believe what I do, and want to share it with other people.
If I can live healthily and happily with that, then I am happy. :)
Money? I've never cared much for it.

I'm sincerely interested, what do you do for a living?

Materialism is empty, complacency is depressing, I don't know how I would live if I wasn't always aiming upwards.

i could make 2-3x what i make now if i tried. improve my skillset and start working hourly and hit 60-80h/week instead of just 40. but i make more money now than i can spend, so why bother?

i'm not very materialistic, which means i end up saving a lot of money. i also see a lot of people who make far less than i do driving nicer cars with nicer apts and eat out all the time. know what i noticed? they're a lot happier than i am. so who's the real idiot? the guy who lives paycheck to paycheck to enjoy his life or the guy who saves money and can't enjoy his life?
