Materialism is empty, complacency is depressing, I don't know how I would live if I wasn't always aiming upwards.

Me either. The Will to Power is enough for any man.

As a conservative Republican, I really have no ambition to obtain great wealth, I just want enough money to be comfortable. As the great Barrack Obama said, mo money, mo problems.

I'm almost out of internet until next week so this is my last post till wed.

I'm on the other end of the line than most of you I'm 52, I've paid cash for our last 2 small farms "luckily" I didn't get a college education I got a pretty nice paying job in a brass foundry straight out
of High school. I did very well at the foundry until it closed.. the early '80's were a bitch so for a few years i did whatever skinned the cat so to speak to feed my small family one son by then.

then I learned a trade and was in construction until 2009 and my back began to break I've got a couple different medical problems with my spine that keeps me chair bound 90 percent of the time now.
but what I'm trying to say is early on we bought a fairly cheap place in the country near the city, I remodeled it and turned it for 3x what we paid for it. having a trade I could move almost anywhere
so we found the same kind of place only bigger and nice and I did it again, now we have the place we plan on keeping. paying cash for it was the best thing We've done since my illness has kept me from earning a paycheck.
and my condition is permanent. Building equity in life is a tool that cannot be overstated. And it has served us many times now when we've needed small loans as stop gap's.

In the early years of fatherhood I worked many hours and missed some of the kids growing up time, but I sacrificed
my off time to spend it with them coaching soccer, or baseball, joining cubscouts and boyscouts, the equity I built in their lives has been priceless as well

I don't think it's any different than before. There were always be people who don't want to put in the hard work to achieve great things. Most people are comfortable with having "enough". The desire for achievement I don't see as changing much generation to generation. Perhaps people talk of money differently, but there will always be high achievers and those who don't want to achieve great things.

I could never sit back and be content. I always want to make more money. I always want a bigger house, a nicer car. I'll mix my money and hard work and achieve that. I'll put the risk in. I turned 25 this year and I've spent more and lost more than most people much older than myself. Most people don't think this way.

I was at Chipotle today and a kid, maybe 10 years old, sees a Lotus drive up, looks at his mom and says "wow mom I want one of those when I turn 16!" his mom replies "you really want to be a person who only cares about money and nice cars?" I wondered why the mom didn't reply "work hard and you can earn that if you want it!"

I just turned 25 and have a nice house in a nice area, a new car and I do alright for myself, nothing super fancy, but i'll pretty easily retire around 40-45 years old. I hope my kids grow up wanting to reach for the stars. I just far too often see my colleagues sitting idle with their college degrees making $30k-40k a year that will probably never make more than $45k a year for 10 years because they don't have the drive to go the extra mile and earn a raise/promotion. Then I see those who do pretty well for themselves and they spend it on a stupid amount of rent and going to bars every night so much that when I ask if they want to go out to lunch they literally can't until they get their next paycheck.

I know I'm a bit old school, but am I the only person who has the goal of frugality and being able to live a bit simpler now so that I can have a wealthy retirement and so my kids can go to college and be more successful than I even hope to be?

Capitalism

As a person matures they usually begin to realize that possessions don't fulfill you. You think kids in Socialist countries don't want the big house and the nice car?

There are plenty of rich people in socialist countries. It is the poor who are much better off. The rich are okay wherever you go.

They have spoiled ass shitty kids driving sports cars in Europe who've never worked a day in their life just like we do here.

That really has nothing to do with my point. Kids wanting more isn't a result of our capitalist economy, but rather is an aspect of human nature.

No, I'm 22.
I'll graduate with zero debt, 401k, Excellent credit score, salary job lined up with a scholar ship for MBA if I so choose to take that path.
My main goals are a career that I love (like my current), condo, cabin that I refurbished myself, wifey and my sportsbike.
The career I have will be pure passion with or without my degree needed.
All my $$$ go towards my hobbies and investments.

until wife divorces you for being selfish and leaves you morally bankrupt and you need to rob a donut store for 100$ and wind up giving b/j's to strange men for 5....
