I've been following Ukrainian politics for years now but didn't expect anything like what has happened over the past few months to happen.

I feel like allowing Russia to have Crimea with the consent of Crimea considering the situation in Kiev isn't terrible. Ukraine is literally cut in half 50/50 between pro-West and pro-Kremlin. If Crimea becomes part of Russia the Pro-West Ukraine will actually have the legitimate authority to govern how they want to govern. As is now, having barely half or not quite half of a nation isn't enough of a quorum for lack of a better word to take such a radical shift in national direction.

Conventional warfare will be roaring back. Not over this, but when there is more scarcity in natural resources.

I agree, there's no war over Ukraine.

Missile defense is getting better all the time, and Russia has never had the ability to destroy the United States, just to inflict "unacceptable losses" while every major Russian population center would be destroyed.

Russian state media meets the criteria for propaganda, allowing the Russian state to exist is a necessary evil for the moment, but I don't think we should bandy about words like "self-determination" any more than we accepted it from the Germans and Japanese.

Even a minor nuclear conflict could lead to a nuclear winter. Like if Pakistan and India just went nuts one day and PKed each other, we'd all be fucked.

The splitting of Ukraine does seem to make a lot of sense. Perhaps this is a good thing in disguise.

Could very well be. Ethnic grouping in bigger nations in general causes these kinds of problems. It's logical that Eastern Ukraine is more Russia favoured and Western Ukraine leans towards the EU.

I don't think this will lead to WW3, and if it does I hope none of the idiots in charge actually are dumb enough to pull out the nuke card.

Nuclear winter is pretty overblown.

Tcock - The only problem is that the real etho-fascists (the Russian) are going to make life miserable for a minority that has just escaped Russian persecution.

That and it emboldens Russia to push for more concessions, and shatters any hope for nuclear demilitarization. Nearly every country that has given up its nuclear aims has been invaded or deposed on account of it.

North Korea has clung to nukes and it has remained safe, Iran is definitely taking notice, and a nuclear Iran will spur a nuclear Middle East.

The middle powers will also rearm, because everyone knows that the American president only cares insofar as Kerry continues to express his deep admiration and respect for Putin.
