Things that I did not know. Hey! Yes. You. I do not know a heck of a lot of things.

Water is useful for life. Like, duh. Side note: There are extremophiles, forms of life which may need little to no water for life. And, yet, water for most life is vital.
With that said, water has a use that I had lightly heard of, yet did not fully comprehend how useful it is as a safety buffer. As a shield.

Just 10' (3m) of water can shield a living organism from harmful radiation.
In this vid and at 7min 6secs in, 10' of water is used to reduce 1000s of rem (Roentgen Equivalent Man) per second to 10 milli-rem per hour. That is insane! Awesome shield is an awesome shield.
