I haven't watched either version but the old version is objectively superior when it comes to the art style.
I love this early 2000 anime moe style to death.
The green haired girl reminds me so much of Midori

Also some time ago I stumbled upon a Midori Days doujinshi by accident and since then I am a changed man. For the worse unfortunately. What I have seen there cannot be described with words. It was pure horror and I lie awake at night with the images burnt into the back of my skull.
