I agree with you D2R content would be better, BUT... remember this is Activision here:

Can't sell you a $100 preorder of an already existing game

Can't put in loot crates / battle passes to further casino-ize the game - easier to do this in a new title so it's not so obviously demoralizing

Activision isn't going to support a pay 2 win model when they aren't the ones getting paid. Creating barriers to the P2W model of d2 in favor of Activision collecting the $$ would require substantial changes to the game itself. For example, I could see Activision allowing you to buy a charm which increases your odds of HR drops. You can pay $50 for the charm. This is the seedy type of P2W shit activision does in other titles, like how in Warzone you can pay for skins to unlock broken weapons/attachments that are otherwise nearly impossible to unlock through gameplay.

D2 has a super old codebase full of bugs, hotfixes etc., making development on top of it very difficult. Needs a lot of refactoring which again would change game mechanics.

I had wrote earlier about the possibility of micro transactions in D4. Like you mentioned Activision is one of the worst with this and I’d hate to see a good title go to shit because of the P2W bs.

I mean, to be fair, this game is more P2W than any other game I ever played.

It's just, activision isn't the one collecting the $$

That’s fair and I’m guilty of spending plenty of money when D2 was big.

That sentence doesn't make any sense

D2 is not P2W

It might help to clarify some things a bit.

Some definitions of winning in D2R:

1. Being one of the strongest in PvP
2. Being one of the fastest/strongest map-clearers in PvM
3. Competing for ladder positions

And some articulation for why I think the game is inherently pay to win:

You can purchase FG for real money and then spend FG to acquire the best items in the game to achieve 1, 2, and/or 3.

Oh I agree and understand that. Just saying, JSP makes D2 P2W is very different than saying "this game is more P2W"

That's my point - the game is already P2W. Activision has a tough challenge to figure out how they can insert their greedy paws into the D2JSP/chinese e-commerce money river for in-game items without fundamentally destroying the game.

Since that's a hard thing to do, my theory is they aren't really interested in investing in this game. Which may actually be to our benefit even if it means we don't see new content for the game.

because theres always that group of people who cant let go of nostalgia
instead they would rather replay the same shit for 20 years

majority of top mmos are remaking the older versions, most games are following how runescape made the older version more popular (by listening to players loool)

I was at the blizzcon when d4 was announced, sat in line multiple times and played all the classes
d4 plays much different than D3 (obviously lots of changes to be made) as well as has much different systems
It played really really well.

If you all keep living in the past in a 20 year old game nothing new will look good to you
expand your gaming horizons, d2 isnt the only game available.

I’d rather pay 60 once and play D2 for 20 more years than play the same reskinned CoD game but have to shell out 60 every year…..
