In short:

- Agreed to trade ingame items for item in D2:R
- Need mediator
- Need 100FG to request mediator
- Neither seller or buyer has FG for said mediator

That's all fine, but even the guide for requesting a mediator does not make a note of this.

If you’re trading items for items use the trade window. Mediators do not go in-game for D2:R.

The minimum amount for a trade and be able to request a mediator is 100 fg. So if you agree to trade an item for 99 fg it wont be possible to request a mediator.

The mediator services are free though.

Trading multiple packs of low runs/gems/jewels, or torches/gheeds vs other items would be a reason for a mediator. You used to be able ask them to help you xfer/mule items, it's still listed in one of the guides.
Though with the shared stash this isn't as needed as much, some people have more than one account still and might require some item transfers and people still play the old d2 and would need these services.

It's an oversight that they added these rules but haven't made a note of it in the mediator page. Wasn't the case back in the day, there was no minimum fg requirement and item vs item trades were mediated.

Minimum FG requirements for trades makes a lot of sense. Considering that the highest amount of scams are related to high runes, annis, and high demand runewords/items.

I've only had to use a mediator once in 13 years, but my experience with that med was very easy and not at all a hassle. I'd assume it'd be the same here.
