ID , short for identification, is just pronunciation of the respective letters. "Eye Dee"
Un is a prefix meaning not, and is pronounced "Uhn", such as unidentified, unforgiving.
Putting these together changes the word however,
It can be understood as Un-ID, which hyphenated would be pronounced "Uhn Eye Dee", but the word Unid takes on a new pronounciation with the combined spelling.
If we were to take the word unidentified and cut off "entified" we would have the pronounciation "Un-Eyed"
Both these are awkward.
The correct pronunciation follows established convention in words such as University and Unicorn, which pronounces a word starting in Uni as "You-nih"
Words ending in "id" are pronounced "Ihd" such as hominid or arachnid.
Which brings us to the correct pronunciation of Unid as
"You-Nid"
