That's a pretty silly statement. There's plenty of ways to invest that aren't stocks, and even within stocks theres plenty of profitable strategies that aren't buy and hold even with stocks. Just depends on the market conditions.
Whether you're buying a "value" stock or a "growth" stock, the process is pretty much the same. Are you getting a good price on a business, considering their cash flow, growth prospects, balance sheet, and other factors, or are you not?
Selling is the inverse of that process. "I bought because I was getting an attractive price, but now I'm getting a great price to sell."
There are other ways of making money in the market, but I am talking specifically about stock investing. That said, most day / swing traders lose money, and the best technical analysts are going to get taken for a ride by trading algorithms developed by quants paid six and seven figure salaries.
