You can buy gear, tools, anything you want. It's the main currency people are after. The goal of the game is to level up your skills (all of them) and coins can allow you to buy the tools required to do so faster and more efficiently.
Just to add a bit, so the tools you need for farming would be the young dragon armor and a hoe (the hoe is a bit tricky to trade for, lots of scammers since you can only trade it in a backpack) or if you are going for trees the axe called treecapitator or something like that, and for fighting mobs you'll need armor, but to wear the higher tier armors you have to complete dungeons (or spend coins to buy a carry through them), and then you can equip the better gear. It gets quite expensive.. the best sword costs 400~ mil. There are pets that give you boosts to whatever you are doing... such as a baby yeti gives you a lot of defense + damage or an elephant will cause you to farm more (necessary for the farming competitions), and then there are different tiers of all items. You want to get lots of accessories and reforge them all to whatever build you are doing... all of this adds up and its quite expensive coinwise. To get this stuff better you can spend money on methods of making money, but even then its often easier just to buy some coin off someone and get your headstart.
