Everything I've seen says that Sorc and (ranged) rogue were OP. Hydra Sorc in particular because you didn't even have to worry about mana upkeep. D2 has the same problem regarding melee + chance to miss hits makes it even more punishing.
I imagine it's hard to program danger for ranged characters without making it cheap and unavoidable? Although melee characters essentially have to deal with the same issue... they need to get close to deal damage which makes taking damage inevitable.
Like early in D3 some monsters had that reflect damage affix that made you take damage if you wanted to deal damage and there was no way of avoiding it. So dumb lol
