This is where the harm comes in. It happened in WoW bigtime obviously, thanks to the proliferation of damage meter addons.

Once players start getting in the habit of checking their damage, they start caring about maximizing it. Then they start conflating their power of their character with the damage they deal. Then more players become more interested in trying to maximize their personal damage rather than about playing their class well or maximizing their contribution. Having personal damage displayed on screen has the effect of sucking players brains into that text box and away from the actual game. Hearing the damage dealers talk about how much damage they are doing discourages players from wanting to play the support classes that carry the group because they want to get in on the fun too.
