I recall that time as well since it was at launch and continued for maybe half a year? Regardless it certainly couldn't keep me entertained. There needs to be a reason to PVM in a game if you want longevity or else it feels simply for nothing. In the case of Diablo 2 it was trading and PVP. Before stat re-rolls you would lvl another character of the exact same thing just to get a slight incremental edge of your previous character since you have better items this time after your time investment mf'ing or trading and thus can pump more points into vita or max ES or go MB, whatever. It was a continued cycle.
Ladder reset hits, okay create a blizz sorc to moat hell meph for initial stages until you get a wizzy and hoz or something , create hammerdin , mf more, cant pvp with either since shit stat allocations, re-roll new pvp character.
That cycle above drove people better than the achievement of killing a waller , arcane, moltan , vacuum pack.
