When fasting, (12-20:00 window open) what do you do if you want to work out early in the morning? do you still chug +refill carbs after session?
What type of workout is it?
No, because fasting isn't consuming
If you're doing keto, taking down a protein drink with no or low carbs may not hurt, but something like a spoonful of MCT oil is closer to fasting. A fasted state is easily disrupted, especially by the presence of carbohydrates. That being state, you don't completely fail on a fast if you have a small snack. Fasting connects with a changed metabolic state; whether or not you're on a keto diet, fasting promotes ketosis. Because it is a metabolic state, ketosis is affected by consumption. Consumption of fats is pro-keto, consumption of protein is somewhat neutral, and consumption of carbs, although not always devastating, is largely considered anti-keto.
It's not nearly as simple as I've described. You may wish to read up on the affects of carbohydrate intake during fasting periods to better understand how it can affect your metabolism. Keep in mind that you can be in keto and consume carbs over the day, but timing and other considerations matter. the same applies to fasting and being in a fasted state. You can essentially cheat on a fast but it isn't difficult to lose many of the benefits associated with fasting. It's really, really easy to drop out of keto/a fasted state so if you're doing it, you may as well skip the carbs unless you really need them.
Here are some benefits of fasting:
- improved immune regulation
- cellular autophagy (restores function in aging muscle stem cells, detoxifies cells, reduces oxidative damage, lowers inflammation -- basically gets bad stuff like dysfunctional mitochondria out of the way, improvement of genetic repair mechanisms)
- improved insulin sensitivity; lowers blood sugar
- protection against neurodegenerative diseases
- metabolic boost for fat loss
- HGH increases
- reduces leptin and increases testosterone
- increased longevity
- reduces the risk of heart disease; reduces cholesterol and blood pressure
While you're fasting, you can still consume: water/sparkling water, tea, MCT oil, coffee -- but don't add ANYTHING with sugar in it to your coffee or tea.
