They took the trading feature from D2 and made the auction house, if they fine tuned it and didn't implement RMT that system would've worked. Look at wow and how they have their auction house. The moment they removed AH rather than fix it and made items account bound I just stopped playing. What they really need to do is look at GGG and how they run POE. My only downside with Poe is that the leagues are too short and that they need to change their drop rates so people aren't maxing out gear within the first week.
I don't think you interpret people correctly. They don't want exactly d2 they just want the best features carried over from it. Because they believe the developers are completely incapable of this due to their past track records results in a lack of trust. When you can't trust them to make something new you just default to hoping for a remaster of the last game that was actually something.
Poe is good but does not have a core component of d2 which is engaging PvP. For many people leader boards and pve progression isn't enough stimulus and they need a reson for doing it and that reason can't be, well now you can run the same thing but faster! That dosent do it. Many want to pair off and play against another person, humans are naturally competitive after all. This drives people to engage in pve to mf.
D2 was at its best before stat resets. Naturally you will find better gear and have to re roll characters thus playing the game over and over since you want your stats to be perfect. E.g. no wasted points in something like str now that you made your enigma or you got an Anni. This created a perfect loope of replayability.
For many of us pve does not feel like a challenge and won't drive the replay loop, beating someone on a leaderboard in pve often feels like a no life task, beating someone because you slightly out positioned or can chain lock better or whatever besides total bming feels good.
