Not usually. Act 2 merc is just too overpowered.

I have read that Act 5 mercs can hit as hard as or even harder than Act 2 mercs. But requires very specific setup, with auras from Paladins.

Act 1 merc can be used to augment certain builds, with Fanatisicm from Faith. And maybe some other builds.

Act 3 mercs can be specifically made, but as far as i've ascertained, are not worth using over Act 2 merc in any circumstance.

Shame that the merc situation is that unbalanced.

a1 merc can be used for lvl15 fana from faith, usually on bowazons
a3 merc can be used in sp walkthrough to kill a specific immune monster
a5 merc can be used in sp walkthrough to wield lawbringer

the fana could be cool.

im using act 1 archer for fana for my convictionist

act 5 barb with law can be useful for lets say cs pala

act 3 cold wolf with push aura is lazy cs version as well

I've read you can't dual wield with the barb merc. That is too bad. That would make it as good as act 2 merc

barbs have funny attack speed with phaseblade

all you basically need him for is push aura and fast decra procs

Goomshill posted a nice post on that about half a year ago. The Act 5 merc gets afaik 2 x min damage and 3 x max damage bonus on one-handed swords. So Ethereal Upped Headstriker is a perfect choice for him, 100% Deadly Strike too doubles damage further. Also involves specially made jewel armor, and don't remember helmet... and said, auras from Paladins. He could hit upwards to 50 000 damage in each hit or something. Fast too. Would love to see that.
