If someone is working a cash job and doesn't mark what they made down as income when they file taxes it will not affect their tax return. Its also illegal and called tax fraud.
So working a month on the books you pay your normal tax rate and you get some of the taxes you paid in back. Most of the time its majority of your federal and state income tax you paid. Depends on what you claimed as far as "0" "1" etc.
You can get more back than you paid in. Based on dependants, tax credits, income bracket, health insurance, etc. Lots of variables.
