I have a decent geared 88lvl a2 nm might merc who does not have problems in any areas of the game but in travi he dies 90% of the time. why is that happening?

Give him guardian angel armor and cap the resist.

council hydras deal very high damage but use the 17% pvp penalty against players, so they deal 6x damage to mercenaries who take 100%
they deal about ~150 fire damage per hydra bolt, slightly different for each mob, reduced to ~25 vs players

tell him not to go alone in travincal.
my merc Bill sometimes drinks too many potions and wanders off to some weird places.

what is your Merc gear and what lvl is he?

my merc emilio survives travincal most of the time. he is wearing an eth bugged forti, uneth andariel helm with a ral inside and an eth insight cv.
i always make sure that before i go trav with emilio, he has the chilling armor casted (from forti) because this armor blocks most of the hydras
that hurt him a lot.

so life-stolen-per-hit (from andy helm) and the chilling armor (from forti) are really helpful... and as liskod said, drinking potions

It is hard for merc with bowa

What I do is shoot multi through the pillars and windows from a distance and run away (esp if merc starts getting hit. Forces him to run or "tele" after me) . Repeat process

When the council members start coming out I puck them off one or few at a time

Don't know if its the best tactic but so far its worked for me.

The monsters in Travi also use Amp which will basically kill your merc in no time.. best thing is to make sure you have stacked resist/lifeleech
