I think its a sort of deserved win for Messi...he is the best player in the world and imo the best player of all time, BUT there is the argument that if Van Dijk didn't win it then what would it actually take for a defender to win it? Comfortably the best player for Liverpool last season, won the champions league and Super Cup, was the MOTM in champions league final, got a ridiculous number of clean sheets, etc.
Perhaps if Liverpool had won the league then yeah.
