If cryptos are going to do away with the notion of a currency having intrinsic value (which seems to be the direction we are headed) then it will represent a big shift in how humans define currency as a concept.
That happened a long time ago with paper money. It was supposed to be backed up by the federal reserves to at least stand in for something with intrinsic value, but there hasn't been enough in a long long time.
