Depends how old.
Would assume older hardware would be less of an issue.
But if it's real old or super new u may have issues.

Drivers would be the only real issue.

my t420 and t430 both run standard ubuntu. Ive never had any problems and ive never had to configure any drivers.

can confirm most older models are fully linux compliant. Ive run several flavors on my thinkpads.

keep in mind mine dont have flash storage on the mobo so using a model with a built on board ssd will need to be configured differently.

dont stick a nose up to older models, theyre quite capable machines. my t420 has so many potential mods I can do it's pretty insane.

ex.
3x hdds
built in sim slot
expanded battery
screen upgrades
cpu swaps
custom bios firmwares
...the list goes on...
