So I decided I want to entertain myself with some Dragonball, I've not watched an episode of it, but have seen bits and pieces in the past 30 years in public tvs.

My question today is, do I need to watch everything since the begining ? I watched some highlights of the original Dragon Ball (1986-1989) and it looks bloody old and boring for today's standards... can i skip that? should i skip that?
if not, how should i watch this? just watch each individual series at random orders is fine? or do they connect and would only make sense if I watch it all from the beginning? frankly I am quite intimidated by the numer of episodes I need to watch if I need to start from the right beginning... looking for advice.

Dragon Ball (1986–1989)
Dragon Ball Z (1989–1996)
Dragon Ball GT (1996–1997)
Dragon Ball Kai (2009–2011; 2014–2015)
Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018)
Super Dragon Ball Heroes (2018–)

special(s)
Bardock – The Father of Goku (1990)
The History of Trunks (1993)
A Hero's Legacy (1997)
Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans (1993)
Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans (2010)

The canon timeline in order:

Dragon Ball - Dragon Ball Z - Dragon Ball Super.

GT is non canon.

I would definitely recommend watching the original Dragon Ball series. It’s actually pretty good, & provides a ton of back story.

What is canon? So I don't need to watch gt or Kai?

Vice versa can I just watch gt or Kai and then if I like it all that much then watch canon?

Soo “canon” is the official dragon ball timeline. It’s basically what counts & what doesn’t.

For example, there’s a new dragon ball video game where the cast fights all types of new villains & new transformations & fusions..but it’s not canon, so it doesn’t count. For example, if Goku fights a villain in the game, they’re never going to reference that villain in the actual dragon ball show, because the game is non canon, so the villain only exist in the game. Make sense ?

The same thing applies to Dragon Ball GT. It was created after Dragon Ball Z, stuff happens, they age, fight villains, new transformations, etc...however years later, they created Dragon ball Super & decided to completely ignore GT & act like it doesn’t exist...so GT is no longer canon. Think of GT as an alternative universe. A lot of people still like it.

I would watch dragon ball, then dragon ball Z, then dragon ball super.

yes thanks for the great explanation

If i plan to watch it all, should i just watch it in the original year release order as stated in OP? or should i watch the order u said, canon first then the alternate universe? and i assume i should watch all the movies after i watch all of the above?

I WILL NOT LET YOU DESTROY MY WORLD!

watch dragon ball, dragon ball z, dragon ball super (movies first...battle of gods and than resurrection f BUT watch the broly one after you finish super series)

avoid kai, it sucks.....shit remaster of z imo

gt is pretty much alternative universe, so you can watch before after or during doesnt matter..same for heroes its based on a video game, so watch whenever

Fuck sticking to cannon.

Super is cannon and it's ass. You can read the manga (that is at least not too bad), but the animation is awful and the pacing is just extra off.

GT's gotten a lot of flack, but really the only bad part is the chase for the black dragon balls. The best super saiyan transformation is and always will be super saiyan 4. There's a bunch of really good fights. The character development at least fits with what was happening in DBZ. Toriyama himself gave his seal of approval on GT yet publically stated he wasn't satisfied with our Super turned out (the anime).

Release order is generally the way to go.
