GW2 is still plenty active. It's definitely the best game of its genre.
WoW is the only game that could be considered a better MMORPG, and that's only because of the large deep player base it has.
GW2 struggles with gaining new player base due to games like Fortnite absorbing everyone.
Right now is bad time for MMORPG business to be honest.
GW1 on the other hand, last time I logged in it was just dead as all hell.
I wouldn't advise going into GW1 alone if you want to get anything done.
Find a group of players who want to migrate there together and play together.
This way you can actually do the content in GW1 without it being a ridiculous struggle as a new player.
GW1 pve is pretty serious business and commonly known as overly difficult at times.
Unless you are an old GW1 player who has access to all skills and heroes, pve is a pain in the ass solo as a new player.
Strongly advise only going to GW1 if you have a group of friends who want to delve in with you.
Not enough population left to PUG up groups very easily if you are alone.
