We never agreed to a topic, and even in social sciences the "ifs" get settled pretty quickly as "yes", "no", or "we need more information to say with certainty". Most discussions with people who know what they're talking about end in that last one by the way.
To be honest I find "debate" as most people conceive of it to be a giant waste of time. The format itself sets you up to not actually listen to the other person because it makes changing your mind tantamount to losing.
