but then sometimes I give up, and just skip a night of rem cycle, at least once a week, typically I'll crash the following evening for 12+hours, to restate the cycle of staying up later each night. 24 hours is not enough time in a day...

I dont like taking pills to sleep, doctor says I should anyway.

Stop using phone/pc/tv 2-3 hours before sleep. Thats why u probably cant sleep. Because of the blue light

It could be the room temperature. Its hard for the body to sleep above 71F. Try lowering thermostat
